There are many things that Ireland does best, but the one that tops the list is the traditional Irish whiskey. Unlike American whiskeys, Irish whiskey is made with barley instead of rye, corn, or wheat. And much like their way of life, the Irish whiskey aging process isn’t rushed into two years but extended to three. We’ve compiled a list of our favorites, sure to complement any dish, event, or night. 

Tullamore D.E.W.

Tullamore is a quaint Irish town home to the legendary whiskey brand built proudly on nearly 200 years of history. This distiller produces more than 11 million liters of whiskey every year and is a true icon of the art of whiskey making. Top contenders for a favorite include:

Jameson

Just a few short years after the U.S. declared itself a free nation as a fledgling country with a handful of colonies, the Jameson Irish Whiskey brand was already becoming a legend. The Bow Street distilling dynasty was owned and operated by a Jameson from its inception up until the 1960s and the centuries of family tradition shine in every drop. Mitchell and Son Wine Merchants has been a family business for over 200 years and is currently operated by the 6th and 7th generations of the Mitchell family. You can’t fake that kind of history, and it shows up in every glass of their Yellow Spot 12yo Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey.

Redbreast

The founders of Redbreast, what was formerly known as W & A Gilbey, opened up shop in 1857 on Oxford Street in London—which you’ll note is not in Ireland. However, within a few years, they opened up distilleries in Dublin and Belfast, cementing their centuries-long legacy as Irish whiskey makers. Today, their range of blends is well-represented in these top two favorites:

Redbreast 12 YR: This opens with a complex and spicy, fruity aroma with full, silky flavor showcasing more spice, more fruit, and sherry-toasted notes. 

Redbreast 15 YR: The 15-year blend is triple-distilled in copper pot stills and wafts aromas of berry fruits and aromatic oils on the nose with fleshy fruit and toasted spice on the pallet with a long finish.

Five Farms Irish Cream

Sourced and produced in County Cork, Ireland, Five Farms is the self-styled “world’s first farm-to-table Irish cream liqueur.” Their award-winning liqueur is made from authentic Irish whiskey and the finest cream from the happiest cows—all grazing among a community of generational, family-owned farms that dot Southern Ireland’s coastline.
